draw knife

Picture of using a draw knife to shave the wood down to the thickness good for making the fan birds.it is very important to have a sharp edge to get limited tearing of the wood.

Making Blanks

Steps to getting some of my blanks to make the birds. I use a hatchet to pop out a chunk, then trim it down. I then use a draw knife to get the thickness I desire.

The Hummingbird and flower are one piece. I little more challenging to make. Flower stem, leaves, and base are separate pieces. This piece is 1 of 4 that turned out.

Riving a for a Fan Bird

Thought I would show a picture of how the feathers were made using a riving knife. the knife is actually splitting the wood, not cutting it.
