Process of the peacock fan carving.
Riving.
Soaking the wood is necessary so the feathers will bend and not break when fanning out.
Completed peacock gan carving.
A small fan is created on the head in the same manner.

Profile of a fan carving
This is what the fan birds look like after the riving and the carving of the body of the bird is completed. Before fanning out the feathers, I soak the birds in hot water for a few hours or overnight to help in the bending process at the hinge point.
