Work in progress of a Blue Bird fan carving.

I am getting more and more request for fan bird carvings. Generally speaking, fan birds can be somewhat generic without any color unless there is a physical feature that makes them stand out from the rest. Hummingbird for example with the long narrow beak. A crane however, could be a swan or goose as well. This bird could be a chickadee, finch or many other birds. But with a colored feather pattern, the bird will be much more easily identified. When requested to do a blue bird, i could only think that it is blue but that was it. I didn’t know the shape. After looking at some pictures, I came up with this shape. Stay tuned for the painted blie bird. I hope my old friend will enjoy it.

Actual Blue Bird:

Making the most out of a blank.

When i make my blanks, i do not measure to make a certain width or thickness. Where i strike my hatchet is where it is going to be. So there are times when I grab a blank, and even though i have a type of bird in mind to carve, i just can’t bring myself to waste any wood. So here is an example of getting 2 for 1. The next night i was able to do 4 for 1.
