Tony's Fan Carving

This hummingbird is made from northern white cedar from the Cedar Log & Lumber Company in northern Michigan. This bird, or birds similar to this can be found on Etsy at:

As I have mentioned before, northern white cedar is the ideal wood to use for fan carving.  So where does one fine NWC? Well, it is not than easy to find NWC that has not been kiln dried.  I wanted to find a supplier in Michigan and found the great folks at  Cedar Log & Lumber Company up in Millersburg, MI. One of my painted birds. A rarity. As much as I like the natural wood look, the paint brings a different kind of life to them.

One of my recent creations.  This one turned out pretty good as far as the symmetry goes.  It is difficult to get nice balance with the wings due to the wood wanting to rebound back to it’s original position while it is drying.  I usually look at the bird throughout the drying process and make adjustments when needed.

this is not the most exciting video, but it shows the magic of the wood fan carving.
