I am wanting to learn fan carving and have enjoyed your photos. I live in West Virginia and white pine is plentiful here. You mentioned that some of your carvings are from pine. Do you know if white pine will work because I can’t afford to order the cedar?
I believe white pine will work. I have been wanting to try it. The kind I used came from Lowes, but I’m not sure if that was white pine. I have been wanting to use white pine. On my next order of cedar I am going to get some white pine. My distributor sells both white cedar and white pine. The northern white cedar is reasonably priced. The guy that I get to lumber from sells the boards for around $7 for an 8 foot board that is a 1 by 4. they charged $2 to cut the board in half for shipping (UPS) and then the cost of shipping. Give the white pine a try. you may want to boil the pine to get the sap out, plus boiling the pine will help get it moist for easier carving. Please let me know how it works out if I don’t try it before you do. Good luck and thanks for looking at my blog.
